Hello, my name is Katie O’Keefe! As a born and raised Minnesotan (you betcha!), I never thought I would end up in the middle of Iowa to continue my education. My parents love to tell the story about how when I initially started my college search process I refused to go to college in Iowa because all they have is corn and Minnesota had the “big-city life”. Yet, here I am in the heart of Iowa, in fact in the capital city, pursuing a journalism degree and leadership concentration from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Since being a full-time student apparently isn’t enough for me, I fill up my remaining free time by being heavily involved with my sorority Delta Gamma, Student Alumni Association, and somehow finding time to work as the Marketing and Communications Intern for the Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation. I am not really sure how I am able to handle it all, but I have many cups of coffee (S/O to Starbucks and Caribou Coffee) to thank for assisting me through it all.
Since I’ve been raised on the idea of Minnesota Nice, I’ve come to realize that everyone on this earth has their own unique story. There are some individuals who’ve had the pleasure of having their story shared, but many are still waiting for theirs to be shared with the rest of the world. I believe it’s my job as a future journalist to develop the social and professional skills to find and accurately tell as many stories as I can. How will this goal correlate into a future job? I am not entirely sure yet and to be honest that scares me a little bit. However, I do know that I want to be surrounded by individuals who motivate me to be the best version of myself everyday.
As I enter into my junior year of college, I continually find myself thinking about the future. Where will my next internship be? What will my future job be? Where will I live? Although my worries become a little more real everyday, I still have to remind myself to think presently, smile often, and to always live where my feet are.
I now invite you to explore my page in hopes that you can learn a few things about me. Although this is a concise version of who I am, I hope you can still learn that I have a zest for life and truly live each day to its fullest.
